The Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility received a Special Achievement in Geographic Information Systems Technology award at the 23rd annual meeting of the Environmental Systems Resource Institute in San Diego, Calif., on July 10. GIS is a computer-based mapping tool with locating information such as streets, buildings, water features and terrain displayed in visual layers and used by utility employees to coordinate various projects and obtain up-to-date information. The local GIS currently contain data about Anchorage, Eagle River and Girdwood. For more information about ESRI, access the company's Web site at www.esri.com. The Anchorage July 4th Celebration distributed more than $5,300 and 2,000 pounds of food to area nonprofit organizations as a result of this year's pancake breakfast and shopping cart brigade. "Once again the people of Anchorage showed they care for those less fortunate by turning out for the pancake breakfast," said Cindy Curtis, community relations manager for Totem Ocean Trailer Express, lead sponsor of the breakfast fund-raiser.
The Rasmuson Foundation awarded $9.4 million to 52 non-profit organizations for projects across the state including a $2 million grant for the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program at UAA to build a 13,000-square-foot, Southeast Alaska-style longhouse. UAA's Consortium Library received a $1 million grant to integrate existing collections and create a virtual library accessible by residents throughout the state. A $300,000 grant for accounting software was given to the Anchorage Neighborhood Health Center. The Nome Preschool Association received $103,000 for additional classrooms, indoor recreation and storage space as well as installation of fire alarms and upgraded sprinkler system. A $701,000 award provides funding to complete the Arnold Espe Auditorium, a new education center and a listening center at the museum at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. The Bristol Bay Area Health Corp. received a $400,000 grant for a new community mental health facility. Other grant recipients include the Alaska Botanical Garden, the Ketchikan Pioneers' Home and the Ester Volunteer Fire Department.
