The Alaska Association of School Administrators announced that Carol Comeau is Alaska's Superintendent of the Year. Comeau has been superintendent of the Anchorage School District since 2000. She also served as a teacher aide, teacher, principal, director of elementary education, and assistant superintendent in the district since 1974, demonstrating a 30-year commitment to the education of Anchorage's school children. Alaska administrators have nominated Comeau for National Superintendent of the Year. Her nomination will be advanced to the American Association of School Administrators for consideration next February at the association's annual meeting in San Francisco.

Attorney General Gregg D. Renkes has named Leonard Marbury "Bob" Linton Jr. as the new Anchorage District Attorney. Since 1978, Linton has served as a prosecutor for the state in Anchorage. Prior to coming to Alaska, Linton served as a law clerk for United States District Judge Edward S. Northup in Baltimore and then as an assistant United States attorney in Maryland. He transferred to the U.S. Attorney's office in Alaska in 1975. He received his law degree in 1969 from the University of Maryland School of Law and received a bachelor of arts degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., in 1965.

Blanche Brunk has been named to the newly created post of the University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Rural Alaska health program. Prior to taking this job, Brunk was the former director of vocational programs at the College of Rural Alaska. The allied and behavioral health programs have grown significantly over the past year due in part to an $800,000, three-year grant from the Department of Health and Social Services.

Eklutna Inc. has hired Rob Gamel as chief executive officer. Gamel will be responsible for managing a staff of seven and overseeing all operations to manage the Native corporation's assets and business ventures. He brings more than 25 years of real estate building and land development experience to the position. He holds a bachelor's degree in business and economics from Alaska Methodist University. Gamel is the past president of the Alaska State Home Builders Association and the Anchorage Home Builders Association and served on their boards collectively for more than 20 years.

Reclaiming Futures of Anchorage has hired Maureen McGlone to lead a five-year local effort to reengineer drug and alcohol treatment and other services for teenagers in juvenile court. McGlone has 15 years experience in program development and working with at-risk teens. She holds a bachelor's degree in rehabilitation services from Seattle University and earned a master's degree in social work at Virginia Commonwealth University.

The Soldotna Chamber of Commerce has hired Keren Kelley as its executive director. Originally from Colorado, Kelley came to Soldotna from Dillingham, where she lived for six years and served as the director of the Dillingham Senior Citizens Center. She has more than 20 years of experience with municipal and private business management.

The Homer Electric Association board of directors has named Rick Eckert as the interim general manager of the utility cooperative. Norm Story, who served as HEA's general manager, announced his retirement in July. Eckert has worked with HEA since January 1989 and became the manager of finance and business development in 1994.
