At first glance, the distinguished guests at the Hotel Captain Cook on Oct. 10 were a pretty diverse group. Among them were elementary school teachers, an F-16 fighter pilot and a state representative, along with media executives and city employees.
But they did share at least two things in common - they are all rising to the top of their chosen professions and are doing so before their 40th birthday.
A crowd of approximately 360 gathered in Anchorage to honor the 2005 recipients of the Top 40 Under 40 awards at a ceremony hosted by the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce. The program, in its eighth year, is a collaborative effort between the chamber and the Alaska Journal of Commerce.
Candidates for the award are nominated by their employers, co-workers or peers and then chosen by a selection committee who had to whittle down the field of nearly 80 to 40. The committee judged the nominees by looking at their achievements in their respective career fields and service to their community and state.
Joining the winners at this year's ceremony was Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, who assisted in handing out the awards.
