Movers & Shakers



  Peters    
Christine Peters has joined the North Star Group as a government relations associate. Peters had previously worked as an account coordinator for an advertising and marketing firm in Alaska. At North Star Group, she is responsible for client relations, legislative research, event coordination, in-house systems management and logistical support, while working out of the firm's Anchorage and Washington, D.C., offices. North Star Group is an Alaska government relations and business consulting firm based in Washington, D.C.


  Niebert    
Wells Fargo Alaska has named Wendee Niebert the manager of its Fifth Avenue store. Niebert has been with the bank in Anchorage for seven years as a teller, personal banker and store manager. She most recently served as the manager of Wells Fargo's 510 L St. store.

  Jobarteh    
The bank also named Lamin Jobarteh the manager for Wells Fargo's 510 L St. store. Jobarteh has worked with Wells Fargo for almost five years, and he was most recently a personal banker at the Russian Jack store in Anchorage. Wells Fargo and its affiliates serve customers throughout Alaska.

Gov. Frank Murkowski has appointed Mike Barry to lead the state's efforts to promote coal exports to Taiwan. Barry is a local businessman who is chairman of Board of Directors for the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority and the Alaska Energy Authority. He is a former banker and has a long-standing relationship with Li Pei Wu, who serves as a key advisor to Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian. Barry has experience in coal issues including his involvement on the Healy clean coal project for AIDEA.


  Mormile    
Catherine Mormile, co-owner of Mormile Physical Therapy, earned a Doctor of Physical Therapy with distinction from Simmons College in Boston. Mormile completed her online studies while working full-time at her clinic, publishing an American Physical Therapy Association-sponsored home study course and co-founding a cultural exchange pen pal program between school children in Knik and Boston.

Fisheries advisor Duncan Fields of Kodiak was this year's recipient of the Alaska Federation of Natives' Denali Award, presented to a non-Native Alaskan who has demonstrated a high degree of support to the Native community. Fields has been extensively involved in development of the fisheries economy in Alaska. He helped to draft Alaska's Sustainable Fisheries Policy and design the Gulf of Alaska king salmon tagging study. Fields also worked to re-establish a tanner crab fishery for the Kodiak area and shape the state Board of Fisheries review standards. He is a technical advisor to the Gulf of Alaska Coastal Communities Coalition, a community-based nonprofit organization advocating for retention and increase of potential of fishing and other economic opportunities for coastal communities within the Gulf of Alaska.


  Anderson    
HDR Alaska has hired three new employees. Kirsten Anderson is a new registered archaeologist. She has 10 years of experience in cultural resources research and management for local, state and federal agencies. Prior to joining HDR, she worked with the Oregon Department of Transportation supervising staff and managing statewide archaeology and tribal consultation programs.

  Welker    
Molly Welker has joined the firm as an environmental project manager. She has developed and administered water quality monitoring programs for state and federal agencies for more than 20 years.

  Beich    
HDR has also hired Molly Beich as a graphic designer. She has 22 years of graphic design experience in Alaska, including managing her own graphic design and publishing firm. HDR Alaska, a wholly owned subsidiary of Omaha, Neb.-based HDR, provides a full range of engineering, environmental and planning services.


  Ripley    
Kate Ripley is the new director of public affairs for the University of Alaska. She has served as a reporter and editor at the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner and the Juneau Empire, along with editing the third edition of Best Places in Alaska. Ripley has also produced and hosted Evening Rounds, a weekly live call-in health show on KUAC-FM. Ripley is currently pursuing her master's degree in northern studies at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The University of Alaska has nearly 20 campuses throughout the state.
